Stellar magnetic activity

LEARNING OUTCOMES After the course the student will have a basic understanding of the physical processes behind stellar magnetic activity and different approaches of modelling, e.g. mean field magnetohydrodynamics and direct numerical simulations. The student will also be familiar with observational methods used for research in this field. The student will know how stellar rotation and the convective turnover time influences the activity, and why these change during the stellar evolution. The aim is also, that the students are aware of the open questions in this research, and that this may inspire them for further studies. CONTENT Stellar magnetic activity is an advanced course in stellar astrophysics. The course gives a basic understanding of the physics behind solar and stellar magnetic activity, e.g. spots, flares, chromospheric activity and coronal mass ejections. Another major focus of the course is on observations, in particular imaging methods based on optical photometry, spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry.
