Dynamics of geochemical systems

EU objective This unit is intended to familiarize students with the concepts of geochemical and isotopic tracing to determine the dynamics of geochemical systems. In particular, the lessons revolve around mastering the notions of residence time of an element in its reservoir, stationary and transient state, as well as formalizing mass and isotopic balances in a quantitative manner. Content of the lessons The lessons are given in the form of an integrated course addressing the following aspects: - mass and isotopic balance (systems of infinite or limited size) - equations and graphical representations of mixing between tanks - chemical dynamics of a reactive system - residence time of an element - definition of the reactivity of an element in a reservoir - chemical attenuation or accumulation in a tank - stationary and transient states - chemical dynamics of several connected reservoirs
