Advanced topics of stellar atmospheres

Introductory information: objectives of stellar atmosphere research, spectral classification. Modelling of stellar atmospheres: assumptions and equations. Energy transfer mechanisms (radiation, convection, diffusion). Interaction of radiation and matter. Atomic data required to build a model of the atmosphere. Basic models of atmospheres, assumptions: 1D geometry, assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, mixing length theory, blanketing. Realistic atmosphere models: 3D geometry, no local thermodynamic equilibrium, stellar wind and more. Models of the Sun's atmosphere. Methods of analysis of stellar spectra. Determination of atmospheric parameters (e.g. effective temperature, surface gravity, chemical composition).
